Helsinki, Finland · code HEL. What passengers are entitled to when a flight is delayed or cancelled, and how to claim.
Updated 23 September 2026 · FlightFund editorial team
Helsinki is located in the EU, so every flight departing from here is covered by EU261 — no matter which airline operates it, including carriers from third countries.
A northern hub for Asian routes. Winter operations are routine here, so an airline citing snowfall as an extraordinary circumstance is on weak ground if other flights departed normally that day.
| Flight distance | Delay 3–4 hours | Delay 4+ hours or cancellation |
|---|---|---|
| up to 1,500 km | €250 | €250 |
| 1,500 – 3,500 km | €400 | €400 |
| over 3,500 km | €300 | €600 |

The fee is deducted only from the compensation recovered. No payout — no fee.
The next step after an airline refusal is the national enforcement body of the carrier's country of registration (Finland): Finnish Transport and Communications Agency (Traficom). Complaints are filed in Finnish, Swedish or English and handled free of charge.
One precondition: you must first send a claim to the airline itself and either receive a reply or wait out the response deadline (roughly 8 weeks).
An enforcement body cannot force payment directly, but its opinion carries weight — airlines settle noticeably more readily once one is involved.
It depends on who operates the flight and where it goes. On departures from an EU airport the regulation covers every airline, including carriers from third countries. Check your flight with the calculator.
Meals, drinks, communication and, if an overnight stay is needed, a hotel with transfers. These rights apply even when cash compensation is not due.
Document the delay: photograph the departure board showing the time and the flight status, and keep your boarding pass and every airline notification. After 2 hours of waiting you are entitled to meals and drinks; after 6 hours, or if the flight moves to the next day, to a hotel. If the airline refuses, pay reasonable costs yourself and keep the receipts — they are recoverable under Article 9 of the regulation.
